Benvenuti a casa

Since day one, a family affair

Il Gembro is the Swiss stone pine, the tree of the Valtellina mountains — and a fitting name for the small hotel & restaurant a family has always run at number 14, Via Gorizia. In the kitchen, owner-chef Roberto cooks the valley's classics the way a host should: buckwheat pizzoccheri, air-dried bresaola, cheeses from the high pastures, wines from vineyards that cling to the mountainside.

Upstairs, eleven simple, cheerful rooms — clean beds, a warm garden to sit in, free WiFi, and a safe corner for motorbikes and bikes. Cyclists, walkers and travellers have been stopping here for years; most of them leave with a recipe and a story.

  • Family-run restaurant & 1-star hotel, in the family for generations
  • Local produce from Valtellina farmers & cheesemakers
  • Two minutes from the station, near the hospital and the piazza

I piatti della casa

What the valley eats, we cook

Roberto's kitchen is built on the Valtellina classics — the dishes guests quote back to us years later.

Rustic buckwheat pasta with melted cheese and greens, like pizzoccheri della Valtellina

Pizzoccheri della Valtellina

Buckwheat ribbons, savoy cabbage, potatoes and melting Valtellina cheese, baked the mountain way. The dish of the valley — and of the house.

Charcuterie board of cured mountain meats, cheeses, olives and bread

Bresaola & mountain cheeses

Air-dried Valtellina bresaola, Casera and Bitto from the alpine herds — antipasti that taste of the high pastures.

Tiramisù dusted with cocoa, with coffee

Tiramisù & orangecello

Coffee, cocoa and mascarpone — finished with a glass of our homemade orangecello. A guest from Scotland still talks about it.

Perché Il Gembro

Small comforts, honestly done

The owner at the stove

Roberto cooks, serves and chats — a host first, a chef always. Regulars simply say: "Top, Roberto numero uno."

Valtellina on the plate

Pizzoccheri, bresaola, Casera and Bitto — produce from the valley's farmers and cheesemakers, cooked fresh daily.

Motorbike & bike parking

A secured spot out the back for two wheels — a guest favourite on the classic Stelvio and Valtellina tours.

Private garden & bar

An aperitivo in the garden after the Castello Masegra and the old town — the best way to end a Sondrio day.

Free WiFi & luggage room

WiFi throughout, baggage storage and parking on site — arrive early, leave late, keep it easy.

Small pets welcome

The family dog agrees: small four-legged companions are welcome to stay and dine too.

Dicono di noi

Guests who come back

"Stayed here 2019. Owner chef was a fantastic host; motorcycle secured round the back. Carbonara, tiramisu and orangecello — one of my favourite places to stay on the trip."
