Pizzoccheri della Valtellina
Buckwheat ribbons, savoy cabbage, potatoes and melting Valtellina cheese, baked the mountain way. The dish of the valley — and of the house.

Sondrio · Valtellina · Family run
Albergo Il Gembro — restaurant & hotel on Via Gorizia, two minutes from Sondrio's station. Owner-chef Roberto's pizzoccheri, bresaola and Valtellina wines, and 11 simple, spotless rooms for the night.
Benvenuti a casa
Il Gembro is the Swiss stone pine, the tree of the Valtellina mountains — and a fitting name for the small hotel & restaurant a family has always run at number 14, Via Gorizia. In the kitchen, owner-chef Roberto cooks the valley's classics the way a host should: buckwheat pizzoccheri, air-dried bresaola, cheeses from the high pastures, wines from vineyards that cling to the mountainside.
Upstairs, eleven simple, cheerful rooms — clean beds, a warm garden to sit in, free WiFi, and a safe corner for motorbikes and bikes. Cyclists, walkers and travellers have been stopping here for years; most of them leave with a recipe and a story.
"Top. Roberto numero uno." — Michelangelo, a regular

I piatti della casa
Roberto's kitchen is built on the Valtellina classics — the dishes guests quote back to us years later.

Buckwheat ribbons, savoy cabbage, potatoes and melting Valtellina cheese, baked the mountain way. The dish of the valley — and of the house.

Air-dried Valtellina bresaola, Casera and Bitto from the alpine herds — antipasti that taste of the high pastures.

Coffee, cocoa and mascarpone — finished with a glass of our homemade orangecello. A guest from Scotland still talks about it.
Perché Il Gembro
Roberto cooks, serves and chats — a host first, a chef always. Regulars simply say: "Top, Roberto numero uno."
Pizzoccheri, bresaola, Casera and Bitto — produce from the valley's farmers and cheesemakers, cooked fresh daily.
A secured spot out the back for two wheels — a guest favourite on the classic Stelvio and Valtellina tours.
An aperitivo in the garden after the Castello Masegra and the old town — the best way to end a Sondrio day.
WiFi throughout, baggage storage and parking on site — arrive early, leave late, keep it easy.
The family dog agrees: small four-legged companions are welcome to stay and dine too.
Dicono di noi
"Stayed here 2019. Owner chef was a fantastic host; motorcycle secured round the back. Carbonara, tiramisu and orangecello — one of my favourite places to stay on the trip."
